living with a list
On Sunday, I had a real easy and slow Sunday–one of my favorite kinds of days.
I sat on the couch with my heatless curlers, a water bottle, coffee, and a book on the table while I did nothing but watch movies, binge television shows, and finish reading some books. I crave these slow days because they have been so infrequent lately, so I was grateful for the opportunity to chill out.
During this slow day, I watched Life List on Netflix, which is technically a rom-com or rom-com adjacent, but it made me laugh, cry, and think extremely hard. If you haven’t watched it or seen the trailer, here it is:
Now, back to the feelings.
I think this Thread perfectly summed up my feelings about the movie and why it had me in my feels:
I just watched The Life List and felt truly inspired. It beautifully portrays how we settle for comfort, choosing security over passion out of fear of failure. We stick to jobs for stability, leaving dreams behind, and are too hesitant to take risks—especially when starting a business or a new venture feels unpredictable. The film reminds us that we often need a push, sometimes even a drastic one, to chase what sets our souls on fire truly. Wonderfully directed and acted, it’s a heartfelt wake-up call!
Sometimes, in adulthood, we lose our zest for life or curiosity. As adults, it seems like we are constantly working, overcommitting to plans (that we actually may not want to do), and then trying to find the balance between being good to ourselves, to our partners, to our kids, to our friends, and family–could have just said our communities. Sometimes, it’s complex and daunting, and sometimes, chasing the bag or whatever is next in our lives makes us forget the magic we had for life when we were younger.
While my life doesn’t look exactly like I envisioned, I have achieved some significant milestones on my "Life List." These include moving from California to the east coast (although we know West Coast is the best coast), getting published in my favorite magazine, Wax Poetics, twice, writing for one of my favorite publications Okayplayer for a few years, interviewing some of my favorite musicians, and visiting Powell's bookstore in Portland.
There are still many things I hope to accomplish before I leave my thirties that I would like to add to my "Life List." These include learning to swim (yeah, I know), visiting every bookstore and coffee shop on the East Coast, finally dying my hair, and learning calligraphy so I can start doing invitations (very specific).
I'm curious: If you could add some items to your "Life List," what would you add?
In other news, here are a few things that sparked joy for me this week:
Proud friend moment: My dear friend,
, just launched her new course for athletes for her business The Gifted Collective. The course, which is designed to help athletes develop and hone their brands, can be described as:“Gain the skills and strategies needed to build a strong personal brand, effectively tell your story, and position yourself for opportunities in sports, NIL, and beyond.”
Yukimi from Little Dragon released her new solo album, For You, and I am loving it.
Loved Soulection Show #676. It’s a mash up of Indie Soul, Samples and Future Beats. Also if you haven’t saved the date yet, Joe Kay’s EP comes out tomorrow.
A new discovery via
is that my favorite part of the now disbanded sister-duo, VanJess, is making music with her husband under the name threetwenty. I need to do some more digging into the music but so far, what I heard I’m enjoying.I’m anxiously awaiting The White Lotus finale on Sunday, and I enjoyed this interview with Leslie Bibb in Harper’s Bazaar. If you watch, who do you think is going to die? I have a few thoughts on this and would love to discuss. Also based on Leslie’s character, and her friendship trio, I thought this was a pretty good read.
I enjoy Meghan Markle. 🤷🏾♀️
