The Grammy Awards and Beyonce stanning
Welcome to Notes from Erin, a newsletter about all things from music, reading to productivity. I’m glad you’re here - subscribe below if you got this email from social media or a friend.
Yesterday I was on The Wendy Williams Show in her virtual audience. I don’t have many notes here just wanted to shout that out.
In other news of the past, on Sunday, The 63rd Annual Grammy’s aired, and it was pretty interesting. There was a time a few years ago where I would religiously watch The Grammy’s, literally sitting at the television with a pre-planned meal and a pen and paper ready. These were the days when I used to write solely about music (read some old work here), but that was over a decade ago. I watch a few performances here and there and just read recap articles if curiosity hit in recent years. This year, however, I did watch some of the performances, including:
Dua Lipa performing what I’m sure will be my most played song of 2021, “Levitating.” She looked great and sounded even better, and honestly, I think I’m a Dua Lipa stan honestly.
Megan Thee Stallion and Cardi B’s performance started with their solo songs, “Up” and “Savage (Remix)” and ended with “WAP,” which still, in my opinion, is TMI. I feel like your partner is the only person who should know about your WAP. Sorry if that reads like a prude, but 🤷🏽♀️
Silk Sonic performing “Leave The Door Open,” which I loved.
Taylor Swift singing some song that I don’t know but didn’t mind either. My mom and I had a conversation about Taylor Swift, and we both came to the exact summation: we don’t dislike her, but she’s not necessarily a person we check for.
Beyonce is also an icon, a legend, leading the pack for women for the most-winning female in Grammy history with nearly 30 awards.
Like I said, our girl is an icon.
I will spare you with how excited/proud I am for Beyonce because, realistically, she doesn’t know me, but I feel like we are family. We’ve watched her grow up and become this legend. I am the person who cries through many of her performances, including Coachella, her MTV Vanguard performance, her Super Bowl performances, and even twice at two different tours. Additionally, I also got lost at one of her concerts and had to have the police call me a cab.
But yes, yay, Beyonce.
In other news, here are a few things I thought were worth sharing this week:
Loving the new Giveon album, When It’s All Said And Done… Take Time. His voice does something to me. Like it kind of sounds like he’s singing up a really hollow tree like I’ve said about a live Jesse Boykins, or that he is singing in the middle of the ocean, but I’m here for it.
This new Oddisee song, “No Trouble,” is a lovely tune.
One of my favorite podcasts, Still Processing, is back this week, and I’m soaking up new episodes of Black Girl Songbook, Jemele Hill is Unbothered and Welcome to Your Fantasy.
An interesting read about how marketers are underpaying Black influencers while advocating for Black Lives Matter. It’s a long read, but worth the read nonetheless.
Interesting perspective about how only your boss can help with your burnout.
It’s sometimes tempting to try to fix burnout by looking at the burnee. High-achieving workers on the verge of burnout might beat themselves up for not making time to meditate or exercise or pre-slice all their vegetables over the weekend. Many online guides to curing burnout emphasize “self-care” strategies, such as creating a daily routine or seeing a therapist.
That’s it for this week.
