The case of the faux deep
This week’s newsletter will be a little bit on the mellow side. My dad is here visiting and I’m reading a new book, Can’t Even: How Millennials Became the Burnout General by Anne Helen Peterson.
Anne Helen Peterson’s name may sound slightly familiar because she wrote an article about millennials and how we are burnt out the beginning of last year, which I suggest you read. The book so far has some of the same ideas but what has stuck out to me so far is how many times I may have in fact been burnt out but thought it was something else - headaches from glasses, having too much caffeine or needing hella cups throughout the day to get through work. I know that sounds weird to say — I do have bad vision, but I think often I didn’t really know how to articulate what exactly I was feeling and what the culprit was.
I will give you a bigger summation of this book once I finish but so far a good read.
Speaking of reading, I’ve discovered two new reading related apps that I’ve been digging so far.
First is Storygraph which is like the cousin of Goodreads. I’ve been a Goodreads girl for many years (maybe even a decade) but the interface has been getting clunky for me lately. I no longer use it to find books, only to keep track of the books that I’m reading on my Kindle. Storygraph premise is as follows:
We're building a new website for avid readers. The StoryGraph will help you to surface the best books that fit your current mood.
If you’re on there let’s be friends. The second app is Readwise. I love to highlight quotes when I’m reading and go back and reference them for something. I once was even a Moleskine Quote Journal person as if that’s a sub-genre of being hella smart (it can be since I just created it). Readwise pulls quotes that you capture in different platforms - for me I connected my Pocket and my Kindle and I’m able to see all the quotes I saved throughout the years. The only thing I don’t like about Readwise is after a 30-day trial it costs money (my birthday is coming if you’re looking for gift ideas however). You can also make them into graphics see the photo at the top of today’s newsletter and the quote below:
In other news, here are some of the things that I consumed since the last time we were together that I think you should as well:
Things to Read:
Like many, I’ve been skeptically following Trump and his fishy COVID-19 diagnosis and I have many thoughts - you fucked up at the debate and now you have COVID? I think he had it before he said anything or something because the timeline just isn’t adding up to your girl. However, here’s another thing - don’t be petty, like the uncute Betty, Trump.
Loved this read on why Monica Lewinsky is great on Twitter which I wholeheartedly agree with. Also, listen to Slow Burn Season 2 while you’re at it. Good tips on how to learn everything during the MasterClass sessions and how you can advocate for your culture at work.
Apparently Lenny Kravitz keeps his cool in other ways than being fine. In other fine, earthy, men news, am I the only who is still in awe that Halle Berry is dating my boo Van Hunt? If you’re bored, I interviewed Van Hunt a long time ago when I was a young Tenderoni - you can listen to it here. I transcribed it for my website and never linked to the audio because I was a little THIRSSTTTYYYYYYYYYY.
Things to Listen To:
My brother lamb Ali just released the second episode of his new series, Tacos and Tastemakers. For this week’s episode he is joined by Lady Midnight for a great conversation about her upbringing in music groups, as well as her cultural lineage and identity. Additionally, I’ve been listening to a lot of Westside Gunn so loved reading this feature on him and also this feature on Anthony Fantano who has one of my favorite YouTube channels on music, The Needle Drop.
In other music news there was a lot of new music released over the past two weeks and some was great like: Giveon’s When It’s All Said and Done EP, and Westside Gunn’s WHO MADE THE SUNSHINE while some were lackluster like Bryson Tiller’s Anniversary and YG’s My Life 4Hunnid.
Although Bryson’s was meh - not much growth after all these years, I know the Drake song will be popular and that some of the songs from the album are going to make there way to Instagram captions of the faux deep peeps:
