Hi friends —
For some reason, as I write this newsletter, Bubba Sparxxx is stuck in my head. I’m not sure why, as I haven’t listened to him in years, but I wanted to share this random anecdote with you.
Now that we’ve got that out of the way, I’m so excited to share this week’s newsletter with you.
In today’s edition, I have an interview with my friend Kate Hergott, host of the Bookwild Podcast. On her podcast, Kate interviews authors about their books and creative processes, and speaks with book lovers, like myself, about literature and beyond. It’s one of my favorite podcasts, so be sure to subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or Patreon.
In this interview we discuss:
How her religious background impacted her reading
Her favorite genres and how she makes time to read
The importance of banned books
The evolution of her podcasting journey to reading preferences
You can listen to the interview on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or Pocketcasts. You can also watch the interview below:
Also, be sure to subscribe to Kate’s newsletter, Stories Are My Religion.
Books mentioned during our conversation:
The Negotiator Series by Dee Henderson, Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn, The Kind Worth Killing by Peter Swanson, Mad Woman by Chelsea Bieker, An Academy for Liars by Alexis Henderson, Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo, The Reformatory by Tananarive Due, The Last Housewife by Ashley Winstead, Scream With Me by Eleanor Johnson, Girl on Girl by Sophie Gilbert, Finding Me by Viola Davis, Matriarch by Tina Knowles, King of Ashes by S.A. A few things to listen to this week:
So many gems in Tracee Ellis Ross’ interview with Emma Grede for the Aspire podcast.
Common was on the Joe and Jada podcast looking fine, and saying a lot. I don’t think I ever shared his interview on Angel Reese’s podcast which I enjoyed.
Good interview with Kevin Durant on The Pivot podcast.
Also, Steph Curry is on Lebon James and Steve Nash’s Mind the Game Podcast. I just started watching it, but will report back later.
A few things to read this week:
There are a few books out today that I’m excited to check out:
Ami Cole founder Diarrha N’Diaye closed the brand in September, and now she’s heading up Skims’ beauty division, which I love to see. Say what you want about Kim K, but she and her team, which includes Emma Grede, are always business savvy. These were some great points via Threads. Also, this reminds me of one of my favorite editions of the Unwrapped newsletter, where Andrea Brown discusses the business of influence, looking at some of Skims’ partnerships. [+ listen to Emma’s interview with Diarrha. I liked how transparent and vulnerable they were in the convo]
Natasha Cloud doesn’t play when it comes to love. You can listen to this as well.
I love this insight from Michelle Obama, which coincides with the release of the book The Look, which examines Michelle Obama’s style evolution. I guess I’ll end here with a few of my favorite Michelle Obama looks:
