Shout-out to the ladies
It's International Women's Month, and women are extremely worthy of a whole month.
To celebrate, I'm giving hugs and love to all the ladies that I love and I'm going to continue listening to Rapsody's Eve album.
Additionally, I celebrated the month by watching Hillary Clinton's new Hulu documentary and I enjoyed it. Yes, I did have the release date in my planner for months - I'm that person, but I was hype and it lived up to my anticipation. The documentary shows that first and foremost, Hillary was some work back in the day, peep the photos below:
In addition to that, the documentary really shines a light on Hillary as a whole. We learn about her upbringing, her time as first lady, how she felt about the cheating scandal and the potential impeachment, and her run for president. A lot of the stuff that they highlighted, I either didn't know or didn't remember. I also love how candid she was in the documentary. She talked about why she didn't feel comfortable saying something to Trump when we was hovering over her like the ugly, unkept flamingo that he is. She also talked about how Bill's affair rattled her, and he even gave some insight into that.
I cried watching the documentary because I'm a soul with good intentions, but I also left with a new level of respect for her. Yes, I voted for her. Yes, I think she has some sketch ways, but more than anything I think she's a smart, powerful and badass woman.
Watch it, and let me know your thoughts. Also, just wanted to say, I think this is going to be the last hella, hella, hella long newsletter. I'm trying to minimize my life, and this will be included.
Any who, here are some of the things I consumed recently.
ALL THE THINGS I'VE BEEN LISTENING TO:
I love podcasts surrounding current events. My favorites have been Slow Burn Season 2 about the Clinton impeachment, and The Dropout about Elizabeth Holmes. Added to that list now is Wondery's WeCrashed which looks at the rise and fall of WeWork. One word: crazy.
Staying on the podcast train, here are some that I've found super interesting:
Oprah's Super Soul Conversation with J.Lo: Your Life in Focus
One on One with Angela Rye - The Black Agenda with Alicia Garza
Little Brother is one of my favorite groups of ALL time. This two part interview with Phonte on Jemele Hill is Unbothered is so good, and deserved its own call out. I definitely need to catch up on all the TV that they mentioned here too. It's a good convo, I found it particularly interesting how they talked about the lack of cross pollination with Little Brother, Foreign Exchange, and their solo albums.
Obsessed with the new Mayer Hawthrone song, "Only You." Also equally obsessed with the new Little Dragon song featuring Kali Uchis "Are You Feeling Sad?" Can I just say how amp I am for the possibility of a new Little Dragon album?
Bosco has some heat with “Paid in Full.” Her voice, and the production is smooth AF. This song is a vibe, and if you have never heard her last project b. that was released in 2017, check it out. I’m hoping that there’s going to be a new project coming soon.
Another song I’m feeling is “Sugar (Remix)” by BROCKHAMPTON which features my pop princess love, Dua Lipa. I love how the beginning pays homage to Usher “Nice & Slow.” It’s a mellow bop. I also was super late to the BROCKHAMPTON train, but have you heard “St. Percy” or “I BEEN BORN AGAIN,” on their album Ginger album? They give me OFWGKTA vibes. Definitely had to sound that out and type at the same time.
I'm an old school Jhene listener, courtesy my best friend loving her during the TGT era. I interviewed her before in my past life as a music writer, listen here (audio bad, transcribed somewhere), and I always find some of her tunes to be compelling. That being said, I’ve been listening to her new album Chilombo, and half of it really bores my soul, while the other side is good. I have to keep listening to it to see if it grows on me, but I really like the collaboration she has with H.E.R in the form of “BS.”
Additionally, I’m meh on the new Megan thee Stallion album, Suga. I think I higher expectations and I found it to be pretty lackluster. Will revisit again and see if I feel any differently.
ALL THE THINGS I'VE BEEN READING
By now, we all know about the Coronavirus. It's scary. People are frantic, the government doesn't know a lot about it yet, and people are spilling a lot of misinformation. To keep myself abreast on what's happening, I subscribed to this daily NYTimes newsletter, but also find this resource on what you need to know to be helpful.
With many people wanting to be active, and have some versatility, things like ClassPass are extremely beneficial. I've used it many times, most recently for a cycling class that I felt like had me crip-walking through the purgatory.
Let me tell you, I was tripped out in that class. It was dark, I had to put my feet in those locked pedals, the music was too fast - I think I got anxiety. I spent twenty minutes trying to figure out HOW TO GET OUT OF THOSE PEDALS. When I finally figured it out, I said I had to go to the bathroom and went home.
Anyway, back to ClassPass this was an good read about how Payal Kadakia made the company into the decade's first billion-dollar company. On the other side, here's an article about how ClassPass could potentially make these studios not sustainable.
Still grossed out about Jessica and the dog, because fam, but here's why 'Love is Blind' needs to fix its beauty problem. Friends raising kids together, "These women are finding fulfillment through a pact that feels both revolutionary and like a total no-brainer." Are you setting goals ? Here are a few categories to keep in mind - well 12, not a few.
