Still eating chicken strips with my champagne
"I still drink champagne with my chicken strips."
I've never heard a song lyric that spoke to me so much, but Kamaiyah made me feel seen.
I'm always trying to elevate myself and cupid shuffle outside of my comfort zone and get other things like: lamb, or steak, but chicken strips are where I find my solace because you can't really mess them up. Yes, they could be fatty, or they could have no flavor, but for the most part they are never too bad. Also, I don't like spending money on things that I'm not sure if I won't like - which leads me to one of the things that has been on my mind heavy this week: Money.
Lately, I've been thinking of how much I work but feel like my income doesn't match all the work that I've been doing. I've been thinking of side hustles to subside the income (since being a traveling stripper is out) or career seeking. With looking for a new job also, one of the things I've been thinking about is what do I really want to do. I'm tired of working in the social space although I enjoy educating people on how to use it and the aspect of growing/cultivating a community - but that's it. I've been thinking of how do my skills transfer to something else, or how I can make a career pivot.
If you have any tips, please let me know.
Until then, here are my picks for the week. Look forward to talking to you in two weeks!
Things I've Been Listening To:
I will always wave the Bay Area flag vibrantly wherever I am, so here I am, waving it. Kamaiyah finally released her debut album Got it Made and it's love. I knew I would love it, but something about her music makes me instantly feel happy. I can't stop listening to "Como Yo" and "Calle de Mi Pueblo" from Angelica Rahe's new album, REINA. Also D.Smoke's new album, Black Habits is everything. Don't judge my 31-year old spirit but I actually do like the Justin Bieber album, mkay.
Oprah's interview with Tracee Ellis Ross on SuperSoul Conversations was everything. She talked about being "choicefully single," things that scare her, and overall it was just a great conversation. Jemele Hill is Unbothered is one of my favorite podcasts - I love how personable she is with her guests, and this episode with Angela Rye was so good. They talked about fertility, the power of the black millennial vote, and more. Also, loved this interview with Meagan Good too.
All The Things I've Been Reading:
I'm basically the Maxine Waters of self-care because I'm reclaiming my weekends, and my time with monthly life admin days. My mom used to make me watch Good Times every Saturday, and I loved Willona always. She was pretty, and sassy, and confident - rest in peace to the legendary Ja'Net DuBoise. Have you been watching Zoe Kravitz' new show, High Fidelity? One of the things I like most about the show is the soundtrack and here's a great read about that.
Really loved this interview with chef Samin Nosrat on fame, her new cookbook, depression, veganism and more. Something I need to do more, actually take a lunch break at work. "Latinx people are often talked about by the media and pundits, but we rarely get to tell our own narratives," good read. Love is Blind on Netflix is my guilt pleasure, but how drunk are the contestants--I'd assume hella. This begs the question, could you go on this show? I could possibly do Married at First Sight although I've retired, but not this.
"What hustling looks like in 2020 depends on who you are. To hustle, if you are working class, is to piece together multiple jobs. If you are middle class or upper class, it is discussed as “multiple revenue streams.” But the goal is the same: pull together a patchwork of income in order to get ahead."
Last but not least, rest in peace to the visionary B. Smith. When I was a kid, I used to be obsessed with her. I would watch her show B Smith With Style, after Soul Train every Saturday morning and she was fabulous and poised and her style was always immaculate. The first time I went to New York, I knew I had to go to her restaurant and my dad took us and I was in love. Very sad to hear about her passing, but she was a legend.
