Lions, Cries and everything in between.
Happy Tuesday
Did you watch the new season of Queer Eye yet? There were two episodes this season that really touched me: Wesley and Kenny’s episodes.
Talk about beautiful men. Wesley’s story was beautiful, and traumatic – he is now paralyzed but essentially said that, that happening to him shifted his life and perspective for the better. Kenny on the other hand was such a sweet man but felt that he kind of was behind everyone and let his life pass him by.
The conversations Karamo had with both, Wesley and Kenny made me cry. Also, the conversation between Wesley and Tan made me cry. The conversation between Wesley and his mom made me cry. The ending of Kenny’s episode made me cry.
A summation of my viewing – everything made me cry.
It also wasn’t a Lauren Conrad single tear cry, it was an ugly cry both times. At one point I looked in the mirror like girl you look foolish and continued to cry. It’s so hard to be so emotionally in tune sometimes.
Nonetheless, WATCH THESE TWO EPISODES and the whole season of Queer Eye. Since I finished, if you have any other recommendations for me, please let me know.
Also heads up, since it’s summer and I have some plans coming up over the next few weeks, I’ll be taking a break, meaning with this newsletter too. Don’t worry, it will be like a two-week hiatus, nothing major. I’ll still be on the interwebs for the time being – hit me up on Instagram (my book Instagram too) or on Twitter.
xoxo,
Young Coco Glow.
LISTENS THIS WEEK:
For listens this work, there are only two things worth mentioning: Beyonce and The Lion King: The Gift AND whether or not we have hit peak podcast.
First, let’s address the elephant in the room—well this time, the lion that is Beyonce Muthafuckin’ Knowles-Carter. In the words of the queen herself:
"Why would you try me? Why would you bother? I am Beyonce Giselle Knowles-Carter.”
This album is phenomenal. Amazing. Everything. Great. Don’t know how many other words I can use to describe my love but those can work for now. We have an afrobeat album with great features: Blue, Jay Z, Burna Boy, Childish Gambimo, Kendrick Lamar, and my boo Tiwa Savage. The songs are great and have been on repeat for days such as “Bigger” “Find Your Way Back” “MOOD 4EVA,” and my new anthem (along with Black Star’s “Brown Skinned Lady” let us not forget) “BROWN SKIN GIRL.”
In other news, I read an article published by the New York Times titled, “Have We Reached Peak Podcast?” and I have many thoughts. First, I would say yes we definitely have. The article says that there are upwards of 700,000 podcasts created and I personally subscribe to a lot—36 to be exact (which I will put below).
The article also says that some people are doing a podcast for the glorification of being an influencer or to get money, rather than the actual being good at the craft. Karen North, a Clinical Professor of Communication at the Annenberg School of Communication and Journalism said, "Being a podcast host plays into people's self-importance. The thing about podcasts is that it's very, very hard to determine popularity. It's easy for the host to appear to be an influencer. And whether anybody finds that podcast or listens to it the bounce rate - who knows?"
I suggest reading the article. It was very interesting, and it also seemed to be a sore spot for some of the people I follow on Twitter.
Also, as mentioned, here’s my podcast list – and yes, I listen to so many that’s why I am very smart and well rounded, tahaha.
