No more stuff in my Pocket
Can I just say the passing of Nipsey Hussle really has really had me down in the dumps this week?
I wrote about him in before in an issue and mentioned how I met him randomly one day while at Roscoe’s. He was so humble, and so nice, and so appreciative that I told him I loved his music and had been following him for a while. Since then, and even before, I followed his career and loved his growth as an artist, a mogul a family man and the hussle he had during it all.
This is a devastating loss for the music community, Los Angeles, his state, and his family. I will keep his family in my prayers, and will remember him this way via LA Times:
“Hussle made music for the street hustlers and those of us struggling to make ends meet and he became a local hero for using the fame and fortune he got from rapping and pouring it back into the neighborhood. It’s easy to root for a man who sold copies of his mixtapes out of the parking lot of a strip mall and turned right around and opened a shop in that same mall the second he could afford it.
Hussle was inspirational, repeatedly stressing that success is a means to make things better for those less fortunate and those who will follow him. When the Times’ Sonaiya Kelly interviewed him last year, he was balancing promotion for “Victory Lap” with the opening of Vector 90, a co-working space and STEM center in the Crenshaw district that he envisioned as a conduit between underrepresented groups and corporate partners in Silicon Valley and beyond.
It was impressive to see this kind of forward-thinking investing from a musician. Hussle didn’t just envision a vibrant South L.A., but he saw it as a hub for our nation’s brightest intellectual thinkers.”
I will just say, it’s sad that we are always so quick to put up RIPs on social media because it’s almost become second nature. I often pray for the end of senseless killings like this and I’m hopeful that one day my prayers really, really work.
In other news, during my brief hiatus, I went home which was lovely. My trip getting there was a shit show however. Your girl saw a mouse run right by her foot in the airport terminal and nearly lost her mind. We all know I don’t do squirrels—I hate them and think they are tree rats that come on the ground and can potentially fall out the tree and hit you in the head, but along with them I don’t do rabbits and mice/rats—gross. That being said, the situation was dramatic, here’s the play by play:
Lady: Watch out! Put your foot up, there’s a mouse.
Erin: *looks down and sees the mouse* OMGGGGG! *screams and runs*
Man: *looks at me screaming* Well you know they are more scared of you than you are of them.
Erin: *rolls eyes while on tip-toe* Hm…. I doubt that. We also aren’t mice so how would we know that to be true?
Man: *ignores Erin’s sassy comment*
Also, because of my brief hiatus, I was unable to talk about one of my favorite things—Elizabeth Holmes. My friend Stephanie and I watched the HBO doc on her and laughed because the story of Theranos is a shit show. I won’t go into too many details, but I have added a few articles about the scam that was.
Until next week , enjoy the sections below and spread love to all the people you love.
xoxo,

CURRENTLY LISTENING:
If you know me, you know I’m kind of obsessed with Marvin Gaye. Not in a weird way, but in a way that I find his life and music very fascinating, beautiful and tragic. I’ve explored all his albums citing Here, My Dear as one of my personal favorites. Last week, an album that was shelved for decades by Motown in 1972, You’re the Man was released. I haven’t listened to it in its entirety yet but think you should. Listen to it so we can discuss .
Also since I’ve been gone, I haven’t had a chance to talk about my new anthem, Lizzo and Missy’s “Tempo” OMG I’m obsessed with this song. I'm currently working on a few playlists so next week, get prepared. I will have a few playlists for you to enjoy, but in the meantime, please reply here and let me know if Spotify still works for you, or if I should look to branch out slightly.
Lastly, in hiatus musical news, my boo Mandy Moore got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Mandy is my long time boo--in fact her album So Real was my first ever physical CD. I remember the day my Grandpa took me to Target to get it and I literally played the heck out of that CD. I still know all the words because it's a classic. I say all that to say, she has great music, and it's about time. Yay Mandy! I think we would be friends because we are in sync. I literally was talking about her hair (the bob) and came on Instagram to show someone and saw in my discover her getting her award. That can't be a coincidence can it? Do something great for yourself today and listen to the So Real album and think of me. My favorite songs on the album are: So Real, Candy, Walk Me Home, Quit Breaking My Heart and Not Too Young.
