A week for women-ning.
Hi friends,
Female friendships are weird, until they are not anymore. Breaking up with friends is hard to do, but sometimes necessary for growth. Moving on from the friendship note and moving into something more powerful with women—is the way women showed up and showed out this election season. There have been more than a dozen women who made history in the midterm elections, including one that I’ve been following for a while, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez who is now the youngest woman ever elected to Congress. Stacey Abrams is still fighting on because let's face it—the elections in Georgia weren’t the fairest, something we knew prior to the election—but fingers crossed the fight leads to something great. Also, super shout out to Texas, for ALL this powerful melanin winning *hair flips* *sprinkles more black girl magic in this email* Lastly, the Democrats—we are the House Majority now—let’s get Trump out of office *fingers crossed.*
Speaking of impeachments and presidents, I’ve been obsessed with Slate’s Slow Burn Season 2, and I’ve been telling everyone—sorry if this is redundant. But I’ve officially finished the series for now, I plan to go back to the first season, but OMG it’s juicy. When Clinton was president, I was just a young cutie on the block. I remember the scandal and the “impeachment” but not to great detail. Let me just tell you, listening to the podcast, I’ve literally gasped and clutched my non-existent pearls a few times. Listen to it and let me know your thoughts. I’m also overly obsessed with Gladiator, which I mentioned before on Aaron Hernandez. Next week is the finale, and I keep refreshing my app because technically, I don’t know what day the episodes come on, but……….. gag me.
Lastly, going back to women, after this far, far, far departure. Last week I talked about Anthony Gignac, the fake Saudi prince AKA peak side hustle goals. Well meet my new favorite, peak petty goals of the week, Quran the fake Trump supporter who got money from some of the dweeb, Trump’s supporters. TAHAHA.

This week's music highlight features one of my favorites, Lianne La Havas, who hasn't made new music in a while--well rather new music hasn't been released. Before we dive into why I need a new album and a funny Lianne story, I wanted to just shout-out the "case of the ex" songs that have been released and just say I'm here for them. First, Ariana Grande released "thank u, next" and it's a cute song--RIP Mac Miller. Then Emily King shut it down with "Look At Me Now." I really had nothing that I wanted to note with these songs, just enjoyed the bad *bitch* vibe of the two.
Anywho, back to Lianne. First, let's start with the funny story: New York is always a good and random time. On this trip in particular with my friend Mareesa, we traveled to New York with someone else to experience our first Afropunk in 2014. We got such a cute AirBNB in Brooklyn, from young newlyweds that had just been featured in Essence Magazine. The space was perfect for three girls--we each had our own spacious room and we had such a cute common space. The girl we went with, planned to take a shower, only to find there was a roach in the bathroom. Not just any roach, but a supersized roach who probably used old chicken bone particles to weight lift. We came to look at the roach and were all scared so we tried to kill it with a baseball bat which didn't work, so we closed the bathroom and jumped on the bed screaming and calling our parents. Eventually, we were able to get a refund for our AirBNB and used HotelTonight for a well rated hotel room.
Our hotel had a spacious rooftop that we enjoyed every night. On one night, we invited some of our friends to come enjoy the space, converse and just enjoy our time--my friend Trey could not stay awake however (think the narcaleptic girl in Jay Z's "Girls, Girls, Girls" video). On this very night, who enters our hotel rooftop (connection coming) no other then Lianne La Havas! We were shocked, and each had our own OMG moment. My friend Ryan who crushed on her told her he loved her and enjoyed her music. It was her birthday, and she was in New York to perform at Afropunk. We hung out with her, and her posse for hours and talked, I even got this gnarley and unclear photo, but peep the smile:
Now why I wrote this post, it's been forever since Lianne has released a new project and I'm ready for something new. I was sitting in the dark and revisiting her albums over the weekend, and earlier this week and was like I miss her. So here are my five favorite songs by her: Elusive // Grow // Toyko // They Could Be Wrong and Midnight
I know everyone is tired of the Kardashians--they literally are shoved down our throats, but when I read this article I literally could not stop laughing--out loud on the train mind you, because it was so witty. Sad topic, because it's the day the Kardashian's found out that Tristan cheated on Khloe, but just read this excerpt:
"After the laser session and presumably charging up these Insta Androids, Kim takes Natalie and Olivia to lunch. The one with short hair and a speech pattern and overall feel of someone who’s under anesthesia asks Kim why she doesn’t drink more. Despite the fact that it was Kim who suggested the table try Chin Chin’s green apple sake, Kim tells her that she needs to be in Vegas to get super drunk. Then, the one with the long hair and the ability to open her eyes, tells Kim that they’ll just have to go to Vegas. Kim giggles and moves the conversation to her upcoming 20-year high school reunion. Kim didn’t go to college, so this is the only reunion she has to look forward to, and she’s been looking forward to her 20th since she graduated. Kim tells the living Instagram filters that she will do everything in her power not to miss this event and she plans on getting wasted there. With that, they cheer."
