Balance in bullshit - search for harmony instead.
Last weekend, I spent some time in Philly with my parents and it was a pretty good time. Philadelphia has a rich history and eclectic flair. I saw the actual street where Teddy Pendergrass had his accident that left him paralyzed--also heard a more detailed account from someone who was around and living in the area, apparently Teddy wasn't the nicest man around. I also heard some more stories about musicians coming in and out of Philadelphia courtesy the legendary Philadelphia Sound record label.
I checked out Marc Lamont Hill's new bookstore/coffee shop Uncle Bobby's and bro, I was in LOVE. When we went into the store, they played Erykah Badu, and Jill Scott. My Vanilla Latte was so good that I drank it in a matter of ten minutes, and they had a great book selection. I also checked out the Phildelphia Art Musuem and took a tour that my father and I quickly departed. Nonetheless, I'm in a great and happy space and hope you are too!
Currently Listening:
In my past life, I used to do a lot of music journalism and help different artists with their PR. One of the artists that I fell in love with and was honored to work with was Marie Dahlstrom. Marie is Danish but lives in London and she not only has a soul and a beautiful voice, but she also plays tons of instruments and produces her own music. Although I'm no longer working with her, I still follow her music because she's sooooo talented.
That being said, Marie just released her new project Kanel and I am absolutely in love. Great production, great vocals. Take a listen, but make sure to do a little bit of a backtrack here are two of my favorite songs by Marie: "What's It Gonna Be" and "Maybe One Day."
Additionally, I've also been listening to an interesting mix of songs which include:
Casanova - "Set Trippin," "Go BestFriend 2.0" and "Left Right,"
Lizzo "Boys"
Elli Ingram's "Table For Two" and "Bells Club/Last Night At Home"
Mahalia "Sober" by the Jarraeu Vandal Remix
Playlist for the week:
As always, I've been adding to this ongoing playlist of jams. Listen to it here.

Last week I mentioned a new profile that I did for The Every Girl, on one of my favorite Instagrammers, GoFitJo. It's been one of my favorite interviews to date, as she was very open and candid. One of my favorite quotes from the article was: "I love to say that balance is bullshit. I say that balance is bullshit all the time because we strive for this idea of balance and it's supposed to be perfect... I always just search for harmony, and the way that I like to describe that is the same way that an acapella group harmonizes, there's a mixture of highs and lows in between the day to make this beautiful sound right?"
One of my favorite things about myself aside from my witty personality, and beautiful smile is my Black Girl Magic *hair flips.* I'm in love with this new article from Refinery29 about 4 Black Girls meeting the women living their dreams. Also, can we also mention how tight this layout is?
I read this on the Metro and could not stop laughing. "Watching my boyfriend eat edamame turns me on. There's just something about him sucking the salt off every pod that makes me horny."
Even though this article is about Asian Americans, I think this is honestly the plight of being a minority in corporate America.
Here's a good list of seven must-read books by women of color. I plan to read a few of them--again, if you're down, we can do a virtual meetup or a Twitter chat or something.
"I get discriminated against all the time. No one thinks I’m a C.E.O. I sit on a plane and tell somebody, “Well, I run this company.” They’re like, “What? You run a company?” And it’s like shocking. You could imagine someone else sitting in that seat where no one would be surprised. Starting the Black Googler Network was sort of selfish in the beginning because there just weren’t enough black people at Google, and I just wanted to get more. We have a recruiting problem and a hiring problem. There is a whole community of people that we haven’t tried to hire, so let’s go try to hire them, and then we can all be happy." - Stacy Brown-Philpot
